Stovetop Popcorn with Melted Butter

4 ingredients

7 steps

What you need

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 100 g (1/2 cup) popcorn kernels
  • 30 g (2 tbsp) butter
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt

Method

Restated from the original video

  1. 1

Put the oil and 3 kernels into a big lidded pot over medium-high heat. Cover.

  2. 2

Melt the butter in a small pan over low heat and keep it warm.

  3. 3

When the test kernels pop, lift them out and pour in the rest of the kernels. Shake the pot so they sit in one layer, then cover.

  4. 4

Take the pot off the heat for 30 seconds so all the kernels warm evenly, then set it back on the heat.

  5. 5

Once popping starts, slide the pot back and forth over the burner, keeping the lid slightly ajar to let steam escape.

  6. 6

When the pops slow to about 2 seconds apart, take the pot off the heat straight away.

  7. 7

Tip the popcorn into a large bowl, drizzle with the butter, sprinkle with the salt and toss well. Serve warm.

About popcorn

Dried corn kernels heated in oil until they burst into light, crisp puffs, tossed with butter and eaten warm.

What cooks argue about

The argument is over popping the kernels in oil on the stovetop, which helps butter stick after, or in an air popper, which skips added fat but leaves the popcorn drier.
