Pizza Margherita
A plain pizza topped with tomato, fresh mozzarella, and basil, chosen to show red, white, and green together on the crust. It stays simpler than most other pizza toppings.
Where it comes from
The dish is commonly said to have been made for Queen Margherita of Savoy during an 1889 visit to Naples, its colors matching the Italian flag, though the story is popular folklore more than a fully documented event. The name stuck to the plain style regardless.
What cooks argue about
Cooks argue over mozzarella type: fresh mozzarella releases more water and can leave the pizza soggy, while lower-moisture mozzarella melts drier but strays from tradition. Basil timing is a separate split.
