Spaghetti and Meatballs
Spaghetti tossed with tomato sauce and topped with large meatballs of ground beef, breadcrumbs, and egg, usually finished with grated cheese.
Where it comes from
It took its familiar form among Italian immigrants in the United States, who had more access to meat than they did in Italy and built larger meatballs and thicker sauce than the dish typically had back home.
What cooks argue about
Cooks argue over browning the meatballs in a pan first for a firmer crust against simmering them raw directly in the sauce, which keeps them softer but can make the sauce greasy.
