7 ingredients
8 steps
What you need
- 1 large yellow onion, about 250 g (9 oz), thinly sliced
- 40 g (3 tbsp) butter, 20 g for the onion, 20 g softened for the bread
- 300 g (10 oz) ground beef, about 20% fat
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 slices rye bread
Method
Restated from the original video
- 1
Melt 20 g (3/4 oz) of the butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the onion and a pinch of salt.
- 2
Cook the onion, stirring now and then, until soft and deep golden, 20-25 min. Move it to a plate.
- 3
Divide the beef into 2 portions. Shape each into an oval patty a little larger than a slice of bread and about 1 cm (1/2 in) thick. Season both sides with the salt and pepper.
- 4
Wipe out the skillet and heat it over medium-high. Cook the patties 3-4 min per side, until browned and cooked through, 71 °C (160 °F) inside. Move them to a plate.
- 5
Spread the softened butter on one side of each bread slice. Set 2 slices butter side down on a board.
- 6
Layer each with a slice of Swiss, a patty, half of the onion and a second slice of Swiss. Close with the remaining bread, butter side up.
- 7
Wipe out the skillet again and set it over medium heat. Cook the sandwiches 3-4 min per side, pressing lightly, until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted.
- 8
Rest for 1 min, then cut in half on the diagonal.
