8 steps
What you need
- 3 large eggs
- 240 ml (1 cup) whole milk
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract

- 8 slices bread, thick-cut, a day old if possible
- 30 g (2 tbsp) unsalted butter, plus extra for serving
- maple syrup, for serving
Method
Restated from the original video
- 1
Whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt in a wide shallow dish until no streaks of egg remain.
- 2
Set a large nonstick frying pan over medium heat and melt a third of the butter.
- 3
Dip a slice of bread into the custard for about 15 seconds per side, so it soaks up the liquid without falling apart.
- 4
Lift the slice out and let the excess drip off for a few seconds.
- 5
Lay the slices in the hot pan, as many as fit without touching.
- 6
Cook until the underside is deep golden, 2-3 min. Flip and cook the other side the same way, until the center feels set and springy.
- 7
Move the finished slices to a plate and wipe the pan. Melt more butter and repeat with the remaining bread.
- 8
Serve hot, topped with a little extra butter and plenty of syrup.
