Creamy Stovetop Oatmeal with Milk and Honey

5 ingredients

5 steps

What you need

  • 90 g (1 cup) rolled oats, old-fashioned, not instant
  • 250 ml (1 cup) whole milk, plus a splash to serve
  • 250 ml (1 cup) water
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 tbsp honey, or to taste

Method

Restated from the original video

  1. 1

Put the oats, milk, water and salt in a small saucepan.

  2. 2

Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring so the milk does not catch on the bottom.

  3. 3

Turn the heat down and simmer, stirring often, until the oats are soft and the porridge is thick and creamy, 8-10 min.

  4. 4

Take the pan off the heat and let it stand for 1 min. Stir in a splash more milk if it has set too thick.

  5. 5

Spoon into two bowls and drizzle with the honey.

About oatmeal

Oats cooked in milk with honey until they soften into a thick, warm porridge, eaten plain or topped.

What cooks argue about

The fight is over cooking oats in milk, which turns creamier but can scorch and boil over, or in water, which is easier to control but tastes thinner.
