What you need

  • 115 g (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 105 g (1/2 cup packed) light brown sugar
  • 65 g (1/3 cup) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 185 g (1 1/2 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 170 g (1 cup) semisweet chocolate chips

Method

Restated from the original video

  1. 1

Whisk the flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl.

  2. 2

In a larger bowl, beat the butter with the brown sugar and granulated sugar until pale and fluffy, about 2 min.

  3. 3

Beat in the egg and vanilla until smooth, about 30 seconds.

  4. 4

Add the flour mixture and mix on low speed only until no dry streaks remain.

  5. 5

Fold in the chocolate chips with a spatula.

  6. 6

Cover the dough and chill it for at least 30 min so the cookies spread less.

  7. 7

Heat the oven to 175 °C (350 °F) and line two baking sheets with parchment.

  8. 8

Roll the dough into balls of about 2 tbsp each and set them 5 cm (2 in) apart on the sheets.

  9. 9

Bake one sheet at a time until the edges are light golden and the centers still look a little soft, 10-12 min.

  10. 10

Leave the cookies on the sheet for 5-10 min to firm up, then move them to a rack to cool.

About chocolate chip cookie

A butter cookie studded with chunks of chocolate that hold their shape instead of melting into the dough, crisp at the edge and soft in the middle.

What cooks argue about

Bakers argue over chilling the dough for a day, which deepens flavor and controls spread, against baking it right away for convenience and a softer, less caramelized cookie.
