White rum is muddled with mint, lime juice, and sugar, then topped with soda water and served over crushed ice.
Where it comes from
The mojito's roots trace to Cuba, where rum, lime, and mint were combined long before the drink took its current name and form in Havana bars in the twentieth century.
What cooks argue about
The argument is over mint: some cooks muddle it hard to release oil and bitterness, others just bruise it lightly, which keeps the drink cleaner but less aromatic.
