Thick Diner-Style Vanilla Milkshake

4 ingredients

7 steps

What you need

  • 500 ml (2 cups) vanilla ice cream, about 4 large scoops
  • 180 ml (3/4 cup) whole milk, cold
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp sugar, optional, to taste

Method

Restated from the original video

  1. 1

Put two tall glasses in the freezer to chill.

  2. 2

Leave the ice cream on the counter until it is just soft enough to scoop easily, about 5 min.

  3. 3

Pour the milk into a blender and add the vanilla and sugar.

  4. 4

Add the ice cream on top.

  5. 5

Blend on high until smooth and thick with no lumps, 20-30 seconds. Stop as soon as it is smooth; longer blending melts it and thins the shake.

  6. 6

Check the texture. Add a splash more milk for a thinner shake or another scoop of ice cream for a thicker one, then pulse once.

  7. 7

Pour into the chilled glasses and serve at once with straws.

About milkshake

Milk, sugar, and vanilla or another flavoring blended until thick and frothy, sometimes with ice cream added for extra body.

What cooks argue about

The variable that changes the result most is the ice cream to milk ratio: more milk makes a thin, sippable shake, more ice cream makes one thick enough to eat with a spoon.
