Milk, sugar, and vanilla or another flavoring blended until thick and frothy, sometimes with ice cream added for extra body.
Where it comes from
Early milkshakes were an adult drink mixed with whiskey. It turned into the sweet drink familiar today once malt shops and soda fountains added ice cream and electric mixers in the early twentieth century.
What cooks argue about
The variable that changes the result most is the ice cream to milk ratio: more milk makes a thin, sippable shake, more ice cream makes one thick enough to eat with a spoon.
