A toasted marshmallow and a square of chocolate pressed between two graham crackers, eaten warm so the chocolate softens against the hot marshmallow.
Where it comes from
The recipe first appeared in a 1927 Girl Scout handbook as a campfire treat, already named for how quickly campers wanted another one after finishing the first.
What cooks argue about
The variable that changes the result most is how the marshmallow is toasted: held close to the flame for a fast, charred outside, or held farther away for a slower, even gold.
